SOUTH CAROLINA -- A 26-year old South Carolina man, recently diagnosed with breast cancer, has been denied coverage by Medicaid since he’s not a woman.
MSNBC reports doctors found the cancer after Raymond Johnson went to an emergency room for chest pains.
Johnson reportedly only makes $9.00 per hour and works about 30 hours a week, should qualify for Medicaid assistance. However, when he sent in the request for coverage to the health insurance, he was denied. MSNBC reports he met every federal assistance qualification for breast cancer patients, except for being a woman.
From Michigan’s government website, it appears that this case could easily happen in Michigan. The website only discusses women’s ability to be ensured by Medicaid for breast cancer, but never mentions coverage for men.
Johnson will need to undergo chemotherapy, but he’s not sure how he’ll pay for the medical expenses.
The report says two other men in South Carolina have also been recently denied breast cancer coverage by Medicaid
