How do you feel about reducing the number of judges?
The State Court Administrative Office wants to cut 49 judges from Michigan due to population declines across the state.
In Mid-Michigan, the 2011 Judicial Resources Report suggests cutting the following Trial Judges in each county:
- Alcona, Arenac, Iosco, Oscoda: 2 judges
- Midland: 2 judges
- Bay: 2 judges
- Ogemaw, Roscommon: 1 judge
- 68th District (Flint): 1 judge
- Huron: 1 judge
- Lapeer: 1 judge
- Sanilac: 1 judge
- Shiawassee: 1 judge
They propose eliminating those positions by not filling them when they become vacant.
The Associated Press reports Michigan is the only state that has declined in population since 2000.
The AP reports that previous attempts to reduce the number of judgeships in the state were shot-down by opposers, who claimed it would put too much of a burden on the remaining judges.
Lawmakers would need to approve these changes.
