Damage and flooding reported from afternoon storms
FLINT -- Storms roared through mid-Michigan this afternoon producing hail, a few wind gusts over 60 MPH, and heavy rain. Penny sized hail was reported from a powerful storm that roared through northern Genesee County in the early afternoon, also producing damaging winds that downed trees in the Otisville area and produced flash flooding from Mt. Morris east through Genesee Twp. and into Forest Twp. The storm then moved into Lapeer and Sanillac county downing power lines in North Branch and producing more heavy rainfall in the northern portions of these counties, with Doppler radar estimates of more than 5" of rainfall in less than 4 hours in some places.
A second line of more widespread storms rolled through between 3pm and 5pm producing a 60 MPH wind gust in Freeland, reported by a trained spotter. These winds impacted much of southern Saginaw county and northern Genesee county again with wind damage reported in Chesaning and a power pole reported snapped in the Birch Run area as well, followed by another round of damaging winds near Otisville.
This line also moved through the Flint area producing heavy rain and gusty winds, prompting Back to the Bricks organizers to cancel the rest of the evening of events, including the closing concert. However, with dry weather now, witnesses report that cars and cruisers are returning to Saginaw street this evening, not wanting to be denied the final evening of the celebration.
