The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hiring unemployed Michigan residents to help cleanup the Great Lakes.
It’s part of a $775 million project approved by Congress, to restore the area’s environment.
To begin, the EPA has launched a $6 million project that will create at least 20 jobs. On the EPA website, EPA Great Lakes National Program Manager and Regional Administrator Susan Hedman states, "in a sense, we will be using these funds to create a small-scale 21st century Civilian Conservation Corps."
According to the EPA cleanup plan will focus on the following:
• Cleaning up toxics and toxic hot spot areas of concern.
• Combating invasive species.
• Promoting near-shore health by protecting watersheds from polluted run-off.
• Restoring wetlands and other habitats.
• Tracking progress, education and working with strategic partners.
