SAGINAW -- On July 13, 2011, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (NMS) worked with five Saginaw teens to discover two Great Lakes shipwrecks.
The discoveries were part of “Project Shiphunt.”
The five high school kids from right here from Mid-Michigan helped discover two shipwrecks in one of the most treacherous of waters within the great lakes. The students found two vessels, the “Schooner M.F. Merrick” and the steel freighter “Etruria.” Both have been lying on the Great Lakes floor for more than 100 years!
The students used cutting edge technology to peer down thousands of feet to find the sunken ships. Using laptops and radar, they were able to see inside the vessels and make this brand new discovery.
