MONTROSE, COLORADO -- “Of all the things to lose, I think your toes are some of the most expendable,” Jon Hutt laughed as he told NBC News about his emergency.

61-year-old Hutt became trapped under a six ton trailer while working in Colorado.  After doing everything he could to get his foot out from beneath the weight, he made the difficult decision.  He pulled out a three inch blade and began to amputate his toes. "I cut until I couldn't take it anymore… I just keep cutting through the bone or whatever I needed to,” he described.

Once free, he wrapped his wound, hopped into his cab, then drove  for 25 miles until he got service on his cell phone to call 911.

He finally made it to the Emergency Room, but physicians weren’t able to reattach the toes.
