FLINT -- Update: September 9th
The man who allegedly intentionally hit and killed 66-year-old Jewel Baxter has been caught.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says 32-year-old Eddie B. Simmons has been charged with Open Murder and 1st Degree Home Invasion.
According to police, Simmons was looking for his girlfriend when he broke into a relative's home on Gloucester Street near S. Dexter Street in Flint. He then began to beat the relative. Baxter saw Simmons beating the woman and ran to help her. Simmons and Baxter began fighting. Simmons then got into his vehicle and allegedly ran over and killed Baxter as he was escaping the home.
"This was a terrible tragedy that resulted in the death of a man who was simply trying to come to the rescue of a friend who was being assaulted,” Prosecutor Leyton stated. "Eddie Simmons' actions are reprehensible and he will be held accountable under the law."
