A newly proposed bill would allow parents to take time off of work in order to be more involved in their children’s education.

Rep. Jim Ananich of Flint says the Family Education Leave Act would let parents take up to eight hours of unpaid time off from their jobs in order to attend events such as parent teacher conferences or tutoring projects.

“The more involved parents are in their kid’s education, the better that child will do,” Rep. Ananich explained during his interview on the NBC25 Today Show.

Rep. Ananich is a former teacher and currently serves on the House Appropriations School Aid Fund committee.

Under the legislation, the parents would be required to give adequate notice to their employer of the leave.
