How do you feel about these bridge card proposals?
Some proposed bills regarding Bridge Cards are making their way through the state legislature.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Wednesday the House passed the bills that would prevent people on welfare from using bridge cards to draw cash from Casinos and ATMS, and would ban them from using the cards to buy lottery tickets, alcohol or tobacco.
Also on the legislative table are bills that would ban use of bridge cards for prison inmates. According to WXYZ-TV, the Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS) would be able to work with State Police to track down whether an inmate is using bridge cards, and can ensure that they’re not receiving the tax-payer funded assistance.
"Yeah it is real helpful, instead of spending 200 dollars cash or 400 every month on food," says Flint resident Maurice Starks, who currently uses a bridge card to help pay for groceries.
"A bridge card is for food anyway so anybody using it other than food, when you catch them then you take their bridge card," suggests Flint resident Joseph Bradley, who supports the current legislation.
The Detroit News reports that some opponents of this legislation, calling it a “Big Brother” scenario in which the government becomes too intrusive on people’s affairs.
