BAY COUNTY -- Construction crews in Bay County's Frankenlust Township accidently ruptured a gas line around 6:30 p.m. Thursday night near Begick's Nursey located at 5993 Westside Saginaw Road near I-75.

Firefighters from Monitor and Frankenlust Township were called in to block off several roads around the area.

Residents were initially evacuated but were allowed back into their homes after it was determined the leak was not a high risk situation.

"There aren't a lot of houses in the way of the gas leak and with the winds blowing in the northeast direction anything around the area should be fairly safe at this time," said Monitor Twp. Fire Department Captain Jim Meyer.

However residents living nearby were asked to stay inside thier homes and to keep all windows and doors shut through the night.

Consumers Energy crews worked through the night. The roads were reopoened and the scene was given the "all clear" around 3:00 a.m. Friday.
