Police and firefighters from throughout Genesee County spent the morning at a memorial service in Genesee Township.
Hundreds were on hand as emergency responders remembered the day the Twin Towers fell. An actual piece of World Trade Center steel will now be housed in front of the fire station. Across town at the Flint Islamic Center, area Muslims also took time out to pray and remember.
Abed Khirfan says, "It's a day that really changed a lot of things in all our lives as Americans."
Two to three hundred Muslims worship at the mosque each week, praying at least five times a day. The 9/11 anniversary hits close to home for them. In this new world of terrorism they deal with prejudice.
Abdelmajid Jondy says, "I'm not worried about prejudice because I don't see anybody who cares about this country more than I do."
Jondy is a surgeon. He's been in the country for 40 years, but he still deals with stereotypes.
Ola Aldabajh also has problems when she travels because of her head piece. She says, "It does become and annoyance because you do feel like your being looked at in a not so positive way and you had nothing to do with it."
But now they look for way to speak out about their faith and to renounce the acts of terrorist.
