BAY CITY -- Bay County officials say a gas leak, that could have potentially led to a house explosion, may have been done deliberately.

Fire crews and Consumers Energy were called to a vacant home on the 400 block on South Van Buren Street around 9:17 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a strong gas smell.

When Consumers Energy arrived, they deemed the situation dangerous.  Nearby approximately nine homes were then evacuated and the road was closed out of fear that the home could explode.

The road remained closed and homes evacuated until approximately 12:00 p.m.

Law enforcement officials tell NBC25 they believe the gas leak could have been an intentional crime, and they’re continuing to investigate.
