On September 25th "Education Nation", a week long event examining education in America, returns to NBC news.
As part of the preview of this event, NBC’s Tim Tooten took a look at a new program called “Parent University,” that helps families better prepare their children for school.
During a weekly series of one-on-one sessions, parents learned learned everything from how to manage their child's behavior, nutrition, and child safety issues in a program connected to the University of Maryland School of Social Work.
Candace Baker, the program coordinator, told NBC, "We did have a target audience in the public housing area in Upton and went and knocked on doors and said we got this wonderful parent program starting up and said would you like to join us and we got our 11 families that way."
Lakeisha thomas is one of the parents who took part in the program.
One of the parents, Lakeisha Thomas, says, "I am a single parent, so I felt like this would be something very great for me and it was.”
The “Education Nation” report seems to indicate that most parents who took this class felt it was extremely helpful in allowing them to better understand their young children’s needs.
If one of Mid-Michigan’s offered classes for parents, would you take one? What kinds of things would you like to learn? Leave us your comments here or on the NBC25 Facebook page.
