HURON CO. -- “Today is a good day to die,” the gunman stated as he barricaded himself inside a trailer in Fairhaven Township Wednesday.
Two Huron County Deputies went to the suspect's relative's home on North Unionville Road around 1:00 p.m., in an attempt to arrest a 41-year-old man who was wanted by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s department for felony home invasion, larceny, and misdemeanor domestic violence charges.
The suspect, who has a lengthy criminal history, refused to open the door when the Huron County deputies arrived. He then proceeded to barricade himself inside the home with a loaded .22 rifle.
The sheriff, undersheriff, and Michigan State Police other law enforcement officials from several agencies soon arrived at the scene.
The team negotiated with the suspect on the phone for several hours before the suicidal man finally surrendered.
He was then taken into custody and later turned over to the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department. The Huron County Prosecutor will also consider further charges due Tuesday’s incident.
