Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs has died. A statement from Apple's board of directors announced jobs' death Wednesday night at the age of 56.
The Apple website states, "Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being." It later continues, "Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."
Jobs resigned suddenly as CEO of Apple in late August after taking an extended medical leave of absence. He had been battling a rare form of pancreatic cancer since 2004, and in 2009 had a liver transplant.

Jobs is survived by his wife Laura and four children.
President Obama made a statement concerning Jobs' death. He said, "there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented."
