SAGINAW -- The strong winds throughout Mid Michigan are causing problems for residents. Fire fighters are having trouble fighting flames in the strong winds. In Saginaw they struggled to keep flames contained to this one home on Joslin. By the time they made it to the scene mattresses, curtains, and blankets were all on fire fueled by the high winds. Neighbor Tyrianna Simmons says, " I was in the house and I saw smoke and I ran outside in a panic and the house was on fire."
According to the homeowner the initial fire started with a candle. The family started to fight the fire at first by opening windows and doors. But fire fighters say that is when the gusty winds took over. Fire fighter Wes Kaster says, " They had a candle burning the candle fell into the pile of blankets. They tried to put it out themselves and that caused a delay in response."
Emergency crews say it's a scene they'll see over and over throughout this season. They warn homeowners now about the dangers of candles, and holiday lights. Its also a great time to check heaters and furnaces since the weather is getting colder. Its too late for this family but a lesson onlookers took to heart.
