The Flint Mass Transportation Authority is just one of many companies across Michigan receiving major funding from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
The Mid-Michigan organization will receive $5.2 million in order to buy hybrid busses and to replace the current fuel-reliant ones. They’ll also receive an additional $3 million to purchase CNG coaches to replace the old commuter busses.
In total, Michigan transportation related companies are receiving $46.7 million.
In a release, the Governor’s Office quotes U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood as stating, “Strengthening and modernizing Michigan’s transit systems will generate thousands of construction-related jobs and put more money in the pockets of working Americans. But we must do more. Congress needs to pass the American Jobs Act so we can continue to invest in critically needed projects to repair and rebuild our nation’s transportation infrastructure.”
Nationwide, nearly $930 million will be poured into companies in order to create jobs and to improve the transportation infrastructure.
“This is a significant investment in Michigan's future,” Governor Rick Snyder said in a release. “A modern, regional transportation system is key to a stronger economy and an enhanced quality of life in our state. I appreciate Secretary LaHood's willingness to work with Michigan on its transit needs and I commend our congressional delegation for securing this critical federal support.”
