President Barack Obama is declaring an end to the war and says all U.S. troops will leave Iraq by the end of 2011.
During an announcement Friday, Pres. Obama stated, “after nearly nine years, the war in Iraq will be over.”
Pres. Obama also stated that the United States’ involvement won’t end with the end of the war. He stated the United States will have a “strong and enduring partnership.”
The president held a secure video conference with Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraq prime minister, just before making the announcement. The president says he and the Iraqi leader agree on the plan to move forward.
