DEARBORN, MI -- Lowe’s stores are the target of much controversy after they decided to pull advertisements from TLC’s “All American Muslim” following a protest from a Christian group.
WOOD-TV reports the Florida Family Association complained about the show that premiered in Dearborn, Michigan last month. They started an email campaign and petition to get Lowe’s to stop advertising, due to the outcry from this group, the retailer decided to pull their commercials from the show.
Lowe’s told CNN, that it, “has received a significant amount of communication on this program, from every perspective possible. Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lightning rod for many of those views. As a result we did pull our advertising on this program.”
However, that action has caused more backlash against Lowe’s. WOOD-TV reports Democratic Sen. Ted Lieu from Southern California calls Lowe’s decision to pull the commercial “un-American” and “naked religious bigotry.” He’s considering taking legal action if Lowe’s doesn’t return the advertisement to the program.
CNN reports the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has now started its own petition, calling for advertisers to continue their support during the show.
The Associated Press reports that Lowe's has since issued an apology for "having managed to make some people very unhappy." However, it has not yet stated whether it will advertise again during the program.
