The Saginaw county sheriffs department is investigating a rash of car thefts in Chesaning. There've been more than two dozen in the last few weeks and just last night two more cars were stolen. Chesaning village only has 25-hundred residents. Police aren't normally busy investigating crimes here, but as residents are finding out things are changing.
Sharon Jennex says, " That's astounding actually. My moms been here for some 20 years now and we haven't had that kind of crime."
According to police there have been 15 car thefts in the last few weeks.
Sheriff William Federspiel says, " One vehicle was stolen last Saturday morning, early morning hours and then two vehicles were stolen early this morning."
Police say cars are being stolen from residential areas. A few stolen out of driveways another was taken right from the homeowners garage. In most cases the thieves also stole items left in the cars including laptops, hunting equipment, even beer and liquor.
Investigators say the crimes appear to be opportunistic. In most of the cases residents are leaving too many items in their cars and then not locking them. In the past that mentality may have worked in Chesaning but residents are learning quickly.
