The Big 1080 WOAP celebrating second anniversary of relaunch
OWOSSO -- Two years ago, Tony Clark and Tony Burkhead decided to relaunch an AM radio station in a down economy.
A risky business move to say the least, but a move that has brought 'oldies' music back into a community that supports the format.
"Its nostalgic. When you tune through you hear talk and a lot of things, but you don't hear oldies anymore or personality anymore on an AM radio station, so we needed to change that," says Burkhead, who co-hosts 'BS in the Mornings' with Sue Collins from 6-10 a.m. every weekday.
"We've been here since the '40's and we've been a part of the community and the community has been a part of us too. Its fantastic," adds Collins, referring to the station's long history in Owosso.
Thursday, the station hosted an open house to thank listeners for helping WOAP stay on the air.
The Big 1080's signal reaches the eastern outskirts of Grand Rapids, into Metro Detroit and throughout Mid-Michigan.
Burkhead says getting the station back on the air after four years of radio silence was a bit like "raising Frankenstein from the dead."
