Saginaw County United Way "Steps" Up Fundraising
SAGINAW -- The staff of the Saginaw YMCA is getting quite a "workout". As NBC 25 found out, it's just the beginning.
YMCA workers hit the gym at 5:00 a.m. Friday until closing time at 9:00 p.m. During that time, the agency is accepting donations to help the United Way of Saginaw County reach its fundraising goal.
YMCA President and CEO Tim Hilk says this effort is one of the newest ways the United Way is reaching out to the community. "there are some individuals out there who may not have been asked in their workplace or haven't had the opportunity to be asked. and this is one way that they can show their level of support to the United Way."
The workout weekend continues Saturday, December 1. That's when the YMCA will host the first annual "Step Up For The United Way Marathon". Teams will run, cross-train, swim and bike the equivalent of a full marathon. That's 26.2 miles.
This year's United Way goal is $1.7 million. Organizers say they're nearly three-quarters of the way there.
