Genesee Co. in negotiations to patrol streets

FLUSHING TWP. -- Flushing Township officials have voted to disband their police department in a move that will save the township close to $150,000 a year.

The township is now in negotiations with the Genesee County to have sheriff's deputies patrol the streets.

"What that will do is give us 24/7 coverage again, which we hadn't had for about a year," said Flushing Township Supervisor Terry Peck.

Peck adds that the township owes close to $1.2 million to the police department's retirement services fund.

"One of the reasons that this is a desirable area to live is good police coverage," said Flushing Township resident Steve Keesler.

"The crime is not going to go down because of the state of the economy," adds resident Jackie Shepard, who has lived in Flushing Township for eight years.

Other Mid-Michigan townships such as Atlas, Fenton and Vienna have already outsourced their police services to the Genesee County Sheriff's Department.
