180-pound black bear will be shipped elsewhere in state

BAY COUNTY -- A 180-pound black bear is being shipped off to a new home after trying to take up residence in a culvert hole along I-75 in Bay County's Fraser Township.

Wildlife officials used a tranquilizer to sedate the animal Wednesday before pulling it from the hole.

The state Department of Natural Resources earlier received several reports about the bear.

Michigan Conservation Officer Chad says the male bear is about 2 years old. It got a GPS tracking device and was being released in another part of the state.

Foerster says the bear was coming out of hibernation and likely was "taking up den" along the roadway.
