Federal officials say they're still a couple years away regarding a plan to clean up a 24-mile section of the Tittabawassee River polluted with dioxin from a Dow Chemical Co. plant.

The Environmental Protection Agency provided an update on the cleanup Monday during a community advisory group meeting at Saginaw Valley State University.

The EPA is winding up planning for a three-mile segment of river near the plant in Midland.

Project manager Mary Logan said the agency will come up with a comprehensive strategy for the rest of the river instead of continuing to divide it into segments.

Logan said the EPA will develop options this year, hold extensive talks with the community next year and decide on a cleanup strategy in 2014.
