Elections officials to decide repealing law should go on November ballot

LANSING -- Opponents of Michigan's emergency manager law are using court challenges as a way to weaken its effect until state elections officials decide if a measure repealing the law should go on the November ballot.

A coalition turned in more than 226,000 voter signatures last month to state election officials that could lead to the law being suspended until the election if state election officials next month find at least 161,300 of the signatures are valid.

Meanwhile, the law's opponents are trying to keep emergency managers from exercising broad powers to run financially troubled cities and school districts.

Two judges have said the appointment of some emergency managers were illegal because financial review teams met in secret.

The state is fighting the decisions.
