Pilot says sun was in his eyes

PINCONNING -- The pilot of a single-engine airplane was rushed to McLaren-Bay Region Medical Center Wednesday night after crashing near Carl A. Gross Airport in Pinconning.

The Piper Tri-Pacer sustained heavy damage, after striking power lines about 50 yards off the centerline of the runway.

The pilot told the airport manager the sun was in his eyes while trying to land, which caused him to veer off course around 7:15 p.m.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration have been notified of the crash.

The pilot is recovering at McLaren-Bay Region Medical Center.

A national database of airplanes lists the aircraft as being registered to Gerald Pergande of Essexville.
