City Council forced to cancel meeting

FLINT -- The Michigan Court of Appeals overturned an Ingham County judge's decision to strip Emergency Financial Manager Mike Brown of his power on Monday.

The ruling puts Brown back in charge of the city of Flint, less than two weeks after having his power taken away.

“This is a process. I plan to be back on the job tomorrow to continue to work on the three major priorities facing the city: finances, public safety and infrastructure,” Brown wrote in a statement released to the media Monday evening.

"As the legal challenges to PA4 move through the courts system, the Flint community needs to work together to address our long-standing challenges with finances, public safety and economic development. While the courts are flip-flopping on the critical issue of the Open Meetings requirement, I will work every day to make our community a better place for families and businesses," wrote Mayor Dayne Walling.

Flint City Council was planning to hold its first full meeting since November of 2011 on Monday night, but instead had to cancel the session just hours before it was supposed to take place.

"City council worked all weekend to get the agenda in order, knowing full well this could happen. I was hoping the court of appeals would hold up the decision," said Council President Scott Kincaid.

It could be several weeks before the case goes before another judge.

A 2013 proposed budget is expected to be released in early April.
