Michigan traffic deaths declined by five percent in 2011 according to a press release from the Michigan State Police sent out today.  After 937 deaths recorded in 2010, the number dropped to 889 last year.

The declines have been driven partially by significant decreases in motorcyclist fatalities, commercial motor vehicle-involved fatalities and alchohol and drug involvement in fatal crashes.

Statewide crash information is collected by the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center.

Changes from 2010 to 2011 also included a one percent increase in total crashes reported and a two percent increase in crash-related injuries.  Crash data also included a three percent drop in alchohol related fatalities and a 17 percent dip in in drug involvement deaths.

Additional 2011 crash information will be posted to www.michigantrafficcrashes.org in the coming months.
