(AP) -- The Michigan State Police is creating a lab dedicated to processing rape kits from law enforcement agencies in the Detroit area. The unit is expected to open this summer and ensure the agency is quick and comprehensive in responding to sexual assaults.
State police process kits for all police agencies in the state and have been working with the Wayne County prosecutor's office since 2009 to improve response in rape kit testing.
About 180,000-400,000 rape kits remain untested nationwide, despite DNA technology that can swiftly link rapists to crimes.
