FLUSHING -- The family of a late Flushing teen is raising money to help schools give free heart screenings to teenagers.

They hosted the first official fundraiser for the Thomas Smith Memorial Foundation at the City Shop Cafe in Flushing.  Smith died from sudden cardiac arrest last January.  He was 17 years old.

Twenty percent of Sunday's proceeds will go the foundation.

His parents and brother are hoping to raise $40,000 to purchase mobile cardiac equipment so schools can offer screenings and prevent the same thing from happening to other teens.
