For the last 40-years, Powers Catholic has been on Carpenter Road next to Flint Northwestern, but in the fall of 2013 it's new neighbor will be the Michigan School for the Deaf and Blind.

It's one of MidMichigan's most popular and prominent private schools, and now Powers is moving closer to downtown.

Students will attend at a soon-to-be newly redeveloped Fay Hall.

The Peabody family has been sending their children to Powers for the last 8-years.

Jim Peabody says, "My wife and our four daughters are stoked. We have two that are through, one in, and one coming."

Jim's daughter, 16-year-old Claire Peabody will attend classes at the new building her senior year.

"I'm really excited. It's cool to be in the new school building and be the first graduating class and say 'I'm the first to graduate from the new school,'" says Claire.

Community leaders held a ceremony at the new location Sunday afternoon, blessing the land, and breaking the ground, a move some thought may never happen.

"It's the beginning of a dream come true for us. Because our other attempts in the past, we've had some doubters about this, but today is the evidence we think. The construction sign is up, we're ready to go," says high school principal Tom Furnas.

Flint Mayor Dayne Walling says, "This is a very large redevelopment project, and it's going to be an incredible anchor on the west side of the city here, a great school, a great tradition, near downtown, near Kettering University. It's really going to complement the expansion of the redevelopment of our greater downtown and city wide."

It's now centrally located in Genesee County, near the expressway, in the words of supporters, perfect.

"It's beautiful. I'm really excited to go to school here every day, it's like a movie, really," says Claire.

Powers' previous location has been sold to a charter school.

Right now, Powers has 550 students.

The new location can accommodate up to 800, which the school hopes to have.
