FLINT -- Kettering University and the city of Flint have announced their role in a new presidential initiative to improve broadband coverage in the United States.

The official announcement was made by President Obama on Thursday morning.

President Obama says "...building a nationwide broadband network will strengthen our economy and put more Americans back to work."

In its initial stages, the plan will use ongoing highway projects to install software for a new state-of-the-art digital network, bringing broadband to more households.  It will also create a new wave of business opportunities in the area.

"Kettering will be focusing on application in advanced manufacturing, green energy, renewable energy technology as well as in workforce development." said Kettering President Dr. Robert K. McMahan.

Some of the seed money for the project was given by the C.S. Mott Foundation.
