Fire crews found a man's dead body when they responded to a house fire in Grand Blanc Township on Thursday.
GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP -- Fire crews found something unexpected when they responded to a house fire in Grand Blanc Township on Thursday, a man's dead body.
Authorities were called to a house around 1 p.m. on Georgetown near Genesee and Hill Roads on Thursday afternoon and found heavy smoke and flames.
Fire Chief James Harmes confirmed the man's death around 4 p.m. Next-door neighbor Mike Gardner said police alerted him to the fire when they banged on his door asking if he know whether his neighbor was inside the burning home.
Firefighters broke in, but found the man dead. Gardner says his neighbor "was a very nice man, whose death just breaks my heart".
Three area departments sent crews to the scene. They also battled fatigue due to the hot weather.
Officials say they believe the fire started in the back of the house.
