There are 18 full-time workers who are going door to door in Flint, selling dog licenses or writing tickets.

A woman told NBC25 that she had dogs her entire life and only one dog has had a license.

Carryl Promowicz said, "my children have grown up with animals. . . We've always had dogs and we've never licensed them, well I shouldn't say that, we licensed them once."

Promowicz is just like many other dog lovers. She said she didn't know she had to get a license and she has a perfect explanation for it.

"I just was never aware there was a law required to have them licensed," Promowicz added.

It is a Michigan law. It is dated back to 1919 and it's called The Dog Law.

If you go onto www.animallaw.info you will find that it is "unlawful for any person to own a dog six months or older unless the dog is licensed."

That may be part of the reason why Genesee County is sending a small army of enforcers door to door to find dogs that don't have a license.

A law most home owners that have dogs probably don't consider until animal control workers come knocking on their door.

"We live across from the animal center here on Pasadena and they came to our door one time and inquired about us having license for our dogs. . . They weren't licensed so at that time [they] requested to license our dogs," Promowicz said.

She said she had to pay about $25 for a license. Now she has two dogs that don't have the proper paperwork and if the enforcers come back to her door steps, she will shell out more cash once again.

The Animal Control Department predicts the crackdown could raise more than $250,000 in fees this summer.
