FLINT -- Hard hats, hammers and lots of little helping hands.

Sixth graders from Holy Family pitched in to make a difference on World Habitat Day.

"There are events happening all over the world talking about what sub-standard housing is and how we can help" says Ryan Johnson, coordinator for the Genesee County Habitat for Humanity.

Monday, volunteers, big and small, gutted a home along Ruth avenue, making way for the soon-to-be homeowner, 52-year-old Ruby Vance.

"I'm ready to own my own home and this is it. I'm very happy today" says Ruby Vance.

The Genesee County Habitat for Humanity builds between six and ten homes a year.

Ruby has worked the organization since 2007 putting in many hours of sweat equity.

"She helped build her friend's house about five years ago. Now she has her house here and is going to be next door neighbors with her best friend. We couldn't be more happy," says Johnson.

The young volunteers are also happy to help.

"She looks so happy and I think she is so grateful and I feel like a hero to her," says sixth grader Donovan Ayotte.

"It's even better if it's going to benefit someone else" says sixth-grader Kate Hill.

As for Ruby, she imagines what she'll do when she moves into her own home.

"I can sit on my front porch and just enjoy company and family in my own home."
