BAY CITY -- Choppy waters and high winds off the Saginaw Bay but the volunteers with the Michigan Red Cross are heading to the east coast here Hurricane Sandy is taking aim.

The first wave of volunteers from the Red Cross have already been sent to Pennsylvania with a mobile truck like this one. Just one truck load will feed 100’s of people.

“They are doing disaster relief and feeding. It is a mass feeding station,” said Regional Red Cross Director Joy Buchanon.

Another set of volunteers are heading the New Jersey where residents have been asked to evacuate and shelters are in demand.

“One of those volunteers is going to be running a shelter and the other one is going to be a liaison between the Red Cross and the federal government,” said Buchanon.

With Sandy quickly approaching the coast, airports up and down the eastern seaboard have been forced to close, leaving volunteers looking for alternative forms of travel.

“We will be sending more people definitely but until the flights open up and we can get people in relatively close to where the storm is then we went be able to send anyone until the storm clears,” said Buchanon.

Buchanon says more volunteers will be sent after the hurricane makes landfall but she added some will stay in Michigan to tend to any ill effects of Sandy.
