GREENLEAF TOWNSHIP (AP) -- A rural Michigan sheriff says someone wanted to make sure that a gun shop and gas station didn't miss the return of a cache of stolen weapons, using a trail of corn to lead him to the firearms.

Sanilac County Sheriff Garry Biniecki says Wild John's Party Store was burglarized Aug. 15 and more than 30 weapons stolen.

The store's in Greenleaf Township, about 40 miles east of Bay City in Michigan's Thumb.

Biniecki says deputies got another call to the store about 4:30 a.m. Saturday to say someone returned 22 of the weapons and some gun cases and ammo.

Biniecki says the person left a trail of shelled corn from a bag at the front of the store to the items by the back door, where the break-in happened.
