A peanut processing facility linked to a Salmonella outbreak will not reopen as planned.

The FDA halted operations at Sunland Inc.'s New Mexico processing plant after 41 people in 20 states, most of them children, were sickened by Salmonella from tained peanut butter.

On Monday, the FDA suspended Sunlan's registration, preventing the company from producing or distributing any food.

Sunland had planned to reopen its peanut processing facility on Tuesday.

This is the first time the FDA has used new enforcement authority the agency gained in 2011 food safety law.
