FLINT -- General Motors and UAW officials broke ground Wednesday on a $7.5 million office addition to the Flint Engine Operations facility.

Construction of the offices has started, with completion by the end of August 2013.  Two office units will be constructed, including a 10,000-square-foot unit at the northwest corner of the plant and one approximately 18,000 square feet at the southwest corner of the facility.

"During the last four years GM has pumped nearly $475 million into this plant and the new office building investment is like the frosting on the cake," FEO Plant Manager Terri Burden said.  "Today we are breaking ground on a project that will allow management and our union partners to more effectively support the employees ho build engines for a wide variety of GM vehicles."

Staff and union offices are currently housed in trailers and a temporary administration buildings that has been in use for more than a decade.

Flint Engine produces two engine models.  The High Feature V6 engine is built by members of UAW Local 659 in the north half of the plant and is used in the Cadillac CTS, the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia.
