ESSEXVILLE -- Plans to move a decommissioned Navy destroyer that's being turned into a floating museum to its new permanent home have been delayed.
The 418-foot USS Edson was to stay briefly at a dock in Essexville, after arriving from Philadelphia in August.
The stay lengthened as construction for the destroyer's permanent site in Bay County's Bangor Township met delays and the Saginaw River's water level dropped to a near-record low. Now, officials are seeking a second tugboat to move the ship.
The Edson was launched in 1958 and is recognized as a national historic landmark. Its new home will be near the Independence Bridge Boat Launch, where the destroyer will serve as the floating centerpiece of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum.
