The Genesee County Salvation Army says it's fallen $115,000 short of its goal this holiday season.

A news release says "The bell ringers are gone, but the need is not."

The Salvation Army of Genesee County said Thursday it is packing away its red kettles until next year, after raising $754,771 for its social service programs, which is approximately 10% short of their campaign goal. The nonprofit still needs another $115,394 to reach its goal in a fund-raising drive that will continue through January 31, 2013. Major Jon Augenstein county coordinator of the Genesee County Salvation Army said uncertainties regarding the economy could be slowing donations."We know that some people have delayed their typical holiday donations," he said. "We certainly are hopeful that we see significant January contributions to put us over the top." The organization’s goal of $847,700 is directed to fund its programs and services throughout the coming year, including utility shut off assistance, evictions, mass food distributions, after-school activities, summer day camps, and much more.

During the holiday season, the Salvation Army had over 60 red kettles manned by bell ringers throughout Genesee County. "The support our community has shown this year through donations toward the red kettle campaign and by volunteering was overwhelming and we are deeply grateful for the generosity that has been directed toward our organization." states Augenstein. "It is this altruistic spirit that allows The Salvation Army to continue to help those individuals who are in need of help." Donations for the 2012 Red Kettle Christmas campaign will be accepted through January 31, 2013 by calling 810-232-2196 or by mailing donations payable to: The Salvation Army, 211 W. Kearsley Street, Flint, Michigan 48502.
