LANSING (AP) -- Dozens of Michigan religious leaders are calling on Gov. Rick Snyder to enact stronger gun control measures in light of the nation's recent wave of mass shootings.

About 50 clergy members asked Snyder to take the lead on addressing gun violence during a prayer service outside the Michigan Capitol on Tuesday. Bishop James Williams of Detroit's Spirit and Truth Christian Ministries is urging Snyder not to leave gun control to the federal government.

Each minister held a piece of paper with the name of a child in Michigan killed by gun violence.

Snyder has said he wants lawmakers to focus on improving the state's mental health system rather than passing gun legislation.

Williams says ignoring the gun problem "does not cause the problem to go away."
