BAY CITY -- A man is in the hospital after being rescued from the Saginaw River in Bay City.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a snowmobile accident around 8 p.m. last night.  The man, who had been riding the snowmobile, was thrown off the machine 300 yards offshore near the mouth of the Saginaw River.

The man was rescued and taken to McLaren Hospital in Bay City.  He was breathing but unresponsive.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Ryan Sayers says, "Right now, our concern is people falling through the ice, but we are ready and have trained for situations, such as injuries on the ice."

The U.S. Coast Guard asks people to remember the acronym I.C.E, before venturing out onto the ice.

Intelligence- know the weather and the ice conditions, know where you are going, and know how to call for help.  Never go out alone.

Clothing- have the proper clothing to prevent hypothermia. Wear a waterproof exposure suit and a life jacket.

Equipment- have the proper equipment.  Carry a cellular phone or marine band radio in a waterproof container so that you can call for help.

The Coast Guard is not releasing the name of the rescued man at this time.
