GENESEE COUNTY -- Genesee County homeowners who are behind on their property taxes who qualify can now get up to $30,000 in assistance.
The Genesee County Treasurer has partnered with the Michigan State Housing Authority to help locally implement the Step Forward Michigan program.
“Anyone behind on property taxes who contacts the office will apply for the program even before we establish a payment plan,” says Genesee County Treasurer Deb Cherry. “This program comes as a huge relief for homeowners who have endured hardship these last few years. The goal is to keep homeowners in their homes and this program is an excellent way to do just that.”
Step Forward Michigan was created by the Michigan Homeowner Assistance Nonprofit Housing Corporation (MHA) to oversee the $498.6 million that Michigan received to aid families in states hit hard by the economic and housing downturn.
Homeowners who quality can get up to 20% or $30,000 as a no interest loan paid back monthly.
In order to qualify, homeowners must be a Michigan resident, have a hardship such as job loss or death of a family member, limited cash reserves, and their home must be their primary residence.
