LANSING (AP) -- A Senate panel will debate a bill that would require people on Michigan's sex offender registry to pay a yearly fee.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to take up the proposal today.

The bill's sponsor, Senator Rick Jones (Republican, 24th District), says offenders have "put themselves in this special club, so they need to pay a membership fee."

Senator Rick Jones was also the sponsor of a bill just signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder that increases the number of people eligible to be on the sex offender registry.
