A special primary election is being held today to fill the now vacant senate seat once held by John Gleason.

FLINT -- ***Update***

Democratic State Rep. Jim Ananich will move forward to the May 7 special election to fill the 27th District State Senate seat that former State Sen. John Gleason (D-Flushing) vacated.  Gleason was elected Genesee County Clerk/Register in November.

As of Tuesday night, with 96 percent of the precincts reporting, Ananich had 60.3 percent of the vote.  Runner-up Rep. Woodrow Stanley (D-Flint) had 26 percent.

Jim Ananich – 7,625 votes

Chris Del Morone – 213 votes

Ted Henry – 1,380 votes

Woodrow Stanley – 3,416 votes

It was a closer race for Republicans.

Robert J. Daunt had 54 percent of the votes.

Robert J. Daunt – 974 votes

Adam Ford – 826 votes

The winner will serve out the rest of Gleason’s term through 2014.  The district includes the townships of Argentine, Clayton, Fenton, Flint, Flushing, Gaines, Genesee, Montrose and Mundy and the cities of Fenton, Flint, Flushing, Linden, Montrose and Swartz Creek.

The ads have run and the speeches have been made, and now the day has arrived for voters to take part in a special primary election.

The election is to fill the state senate seat of Senator John Gleason.

Robert Daunt and Adam Ford represent the Republicans on the ballot.

On the ballot for the Democrats there is Jim Ananich, Woodrow Stanley, Chris Del Morone, Lawrence Woods and Ted Henry.

The winners in each party will face off in May.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today.
