BRECKENRIDGE -- A former elementary school in the Midland County Village of Breckenridge is being torn down.

West Elementary School was built in 1936.

The school was used as a community education center from 1995 until 2009 when officials stopped using it.

Crews began demolition last week.

The superintendent says the building was deteriorating to the point where it was no longer deemed safe.

Sean McNatt said, "The building just wasn't safe anymore to be inside for our students. It just didn't have the latest technology upgrades. We just felt that in the near future in wasn't gonna be safe for our community."

The demolition is expected to last another week.
