It's day two of Wacky Winter Weather Week. Sometimes scientific things just don't go the way you think they will.  Flushing Middle School shows us how quickly hot water can change form.
FLUSHING -- Flushing Middle School says," Hi, I'm Doctor Cane Shaw.  We're here today to look at an experiment for Mr. Groulx's seventh grade class.   Welcome to Flushing Middle School.  We all know it can get cold in Michigan.  But how cold does it have to be for boiling water to freeze when you throw it in the air.  First of all, we have to check what temperature our water is at."  Students then took the boiled water outside and threw it up in the air.  The outside temperature was twelve degrees.  When the boiled water was thrown into the air, it turned to snow immediately.  This doesn't happen with cold water.  The reason- the hot water turns to vapor quickly. The vapor has tiny droplets with a large total surface area.  So it can cool down very quickly.
Students, remember that working with boiling water can be dangerous, so have your parents help you.  Serious burns can happen if you aren't careful.
