GENESEE COUNTY -- You could say it's common knowledge, when wintry weather hits the road so does common sense driving.

"Just because the speed limit is 70 miles per hour, it doesn't mean it's safe to drive 70 miles per hour,” Michigan State Trooper Rick Jones said.

Soon after the snow arrived Wednesday night, cars were slipping and sliding, triggering dozens of fender benders.

It was good business for the towing companies that responded to calls, and made for a busy morning for emergency crews who were called to at least 15 crashes on I-69.  The highway was closed between Oak and Vassar roads in Davison Township for about an hour Thursday morning

Two people were hit when they left their vehicles.  Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Police are reminding drivers to slow down around accident scenes for everyone's safety.

"It's actually a ticket-able offense for failing to move over for an emergency responder,” Tpr. Jones said.

The Genesee County Road Commission has a squadron of plows and trucks salting and brining the roads and gearing up for more snow.

The lack of wind Thursday evening is good news – it will make snow removal easier.

Director of the Genesee Co. Road Commission John Daly said, “Once it's cleared from the roadway it should be pretty much staying off of the roadway."

But that's not license to be less cautious, he said.

“You need to be looking further down the road."

When in doubt, drivers are advised to give themselves extra time and extra space and share the roads responsibly.
